Simple training steps to becoming a better low post player

As a post player, your bread and butter game is in the low post.  So you have to learn, train, and perfect that part of your game.

So what's the best way to train your low post game?

The quick answer is hard work.  But there are some simple, but hugely important, things you should keep in mind when planning your training routine to improve your low post game.

Work on the Fundamental Moves
The "fundamental" moves in the post are drop steps moves, step back moves, turnaround jumpers, show-and-go moves, and jump hooks.  To be a solid low-post player, you need to, at the every minimum, be well-versed and skilled with these moves.  So practice them time and time again until they become second nature to you.

Go Left or Right
Another key concept in having a strong low post game is the ability to make your moves going right or left, regardless of which is your strong side.

Of course, most players have a strong, or favorite side they like to go to.  But work really hard at making sure that you can go to your left or right, because you need the ability to go either way depending on which side the defense is playing.

Work on Both Sides of the Floor
In addition to being able to go to your left or right, you should train to feel comfortable on either side of the floor. Many players have a favorite side of the floor that they go to just about every time down the court. But you won't always be able to post up on your favorite side of the court.

So work on being able to post up on either side of the floor, and be able to make your moves going to your right or left.

Train with Quickness and Power
The low post is one spot on the floor where you'll need to use quickness and power to survivie and thrive. So make sure to train in this way.

I see a lot of players working on their low post game in a very slow, methodical manner.  This may be useful if you're just starting out in the game, or just learning certain moves.  But once you become more advanced, you have to take your training to an advanced level.  Train at game speeds, and with game intensity.  This is a key part of having a solid training program.

So, becoming a solid low post player requires lots of hard work, and training geared toward this spot on the floor.  But it all starts with working on, and becoming skilled at the basic, fundamental moves used in the low post.  Be sure to work on going left and right, and from either side of the floor.  And very important:  train at game speed and with game intensity.

Keep these things in mind while training your low post game and you'll be well ahead of your competition.
