Why it's key to work on these areas of your game

Two areas I focus on with private coaching clients are developing core strength and balance.

Most players, when they think about developing their games, don't put these very high on their list of priorities.  But I would suggest that you do.  These are two areas that are critically important to your success as a basketball player (especially a post player).

Core strength
Your core connects your upper body and lower body. And when you think about it, it's really a critical part of every move you make on the basketball court. Whether it's grabbing a rebound, posting up, setting a screen, playing on-ball defense...you name it, and your core is involved and a key part of whether or not you get the job done well.

Why is the core so important?  It's a connector between your upper and lower body, and because basketball is a sport that involves so much jumping, reaching, and bending, your core plays a big part in helping you do these moves well, or not so well.

Think about how stretched out your body is as you reach high for a rebound, or jump to block a shot, or jump high for a shot.  Your core will help keep make these moves with quickness, strength, and decisiveness (if you're well trained and strong in this area).  Some of the best exercises you can do to work your core are those using the bosu balance ball or an exercise ball. Exercises using the bosu ball or an exercise ball force your core to be involved in your training movements.

In addition to helping develop your core strength, these types of exercises also help develop your balance, which is tied in closely with how strong you are through the core area of your body.

Balance allows you to make the moves you'll need to on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.  Working on post moves with proper footwork, working on defending with proper footwork, and doing core strength training exercises should put you well on your way to developing and strengthening these two important parts of your game:  core strength and balance.
